The Laser Art Process
Creating laser art on wood is a really exciting process, and we’d love to walk you through how it works!
1. Designing the Artwork
First, we either create a custom design or work with an existing one, using design software like Adobe Illustrator or LightBurn. This step is where the creativity really shines — We carefully lay out the design, making sure every detail is just right before moving on.
2. Preparing the Wood
Next, we prepare the wood. We like to use materials like birch, maple, or walnut because they engrave beautifully. The surface gets a light sanding to make sure it’s smooth, and sometimes We’ll apply masking tape over the top. This helps protect the wood from burn marks during the engraving process.
3. Setting Up the Laser
Once the wood is ready, we place it in the laser machine and adjust the focus so the laser is at the perfect distance for clean cuts and engravings. We also fine-tune the power and speed settings depending on the type of wood and the look We’re going for — whether it’s a deep engraving or a more delicate, surface-level etching.
4. Running a Test
Before engraving the final piece, we always run a quick test on a scrap piece of wood. This makes sure everything is aligned properly and the settings are spot on. It’s an extra step, but it helps ensure the final result is perfect.
5. Engraving/Cutting the Design
Once everything looks good, it’s time for the magic to happen! The laser carefully traces the design onto the wood, either engraving the surface or cutting straight through, depending on the project. We always keep a close eye on the process to make sure everything goes smoothly.
6. Finishing Touches
After the laser work is done, we carefully remove any masking and clean off any residue or soot. Sometimes we’ll add a finish — like oil or varnish — to bring out the wood’s natural beauty and give it a bit of extra protection.
The result is a unique piece of art that’s both personal and long-lasting. It’s such a rewarding process, and we love creating pieces that people can cherish. If you have a specific design or idea in mind, we’d be happy to bring it to life!
